Dirk Rees. Awesome!

Dirk Rees began his career whilst travelling & working in Africa. His work has been featured in Elle, GQ, Junior Magazine, Tramp, Maxim and various Sunday supplements amongst many others. Following his move from Cape Town to London three years ago, Dirk's style has evolved significantly from his beginnings in landscape and fashion photography to the advertising and editorial work he does today. Dirk is deeply passionate about his personal work, which embodies both strong visual conceptualisation and a particularly cinematic aesthetic.

The campaign for English National Ballet (ENB) was a dream project for a photographer. It gave a great deal of creative freedom to the person behind the lens. Dirk was asked to shoot in a reportage style but otherwise it was an open brief. ENB wanted to bring the audience closer to the intimacy and intensity of ballet so Dirk spent two days with the cast following them behind the scenes, watching their interactions, the way they prepare themselves for a performance and getting to know the whole company. He then deconstructed these moments before remoulding them into a configuration, which deftly captures the drama and beauty of the life of a ballerina, both behind and in front of the curtain.
