IDN(国际设计家联网)杂志第61期，本期的主题是“Playing With Words”(文字游戏)：说明图像，也许得花上数以千计的文字，但以下我们要说明的这种图像，却是由文字本身建立起来的。如果文字与图像有冲突的话，那么居间调和的，就是字学设计。

在设计术语里，字型设计称为Font或者TypeFace，而图像设计称为Graphic，字学设计（typography）就是二者的结合，成了平面设计中强而有力的元素。从艺术风格出发的平面设计里，考量较多的，是字体造型运用的可能性，而字体的易读性考量较少。Typography源于古希腊文，意思是“将之象征化或具体形象化”。



Playing with words

In the language of design, words are the fonts/typeface and pictures are the graphics. Typography is simply a combination of both and a potent element in graphic design, where there is less concern for readability than for the potential of using type in an artistic manner.

When a font designer no longer only designs fonts for their own sake, but fonts with particular applications, such as for posters or other promotional items such as catalogues, and a graphic designer will custom-make fonts for specific projects: album covers, fashion campaigns, etc. Where does one stop and the other start?

We invited seven font/graphic designers and asked them this question. Some of their answers surprised us. We also spotlight a film director who has recently made a documentary film on one of the most common font types: Helvetica.
